ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND THE PERIODIC TABLE

Introduction

This module should be read in conjunction with the Programme of Study.

The Programme of Study lists the topics that are in the module and gives you the relevant page references for your textbook. This module aims to give you more direction as you work through the various topics. It will aim to highlight the most important items in the topic, as well as areas that need particular care. It will also point you towards the resources you should be using.

Module Overview

The first section of this module reviews the knowledge and skills you gained at IGCSE. You will need to build on those skills to progress, so take your time to refresh these ideas before moving on.

Next the module concentrates on the fundamental particles of chemistry, the atoms. It builds upon IGCSE knowledge. You should be confident in using the periodic table to determine describing the number and type of sub-atomic particles in each element. The module moves on to describe mass spectrometry which was key to determining the atomic mass of each element. Finally, the location of electrons in quantum shells are described and used to extend your understanding of the periodic table.

Remember to use only the periodic table given in your current textbook.
