Module Overview
It was in Italy that the first of the post-war fascist dictatorships was established. The strains on the economy and society produced by the First World War and post-war economic fluctuations created tensions and reactions to which the political and constitutional systems were ill-adapted to respond, leaving scope for 'direct' action justified by the restoration of order and national pride.
You need to understand these underlying causes of Mussolini’s rise to power, and to judge how effectively he strengthened and maintained control. You must also analyse the aspirations and success of his administration and foreign policy.
