Topic One (1.1): Techniques to Measure the Rate of a Reaction
Introduction
This section concentrates on techniques to measure changes in concentration of either the reactant or product(s) of a reaction. You should be familiar with measuring evolution of gases with a gas syringe or change of mass using a balance. If either the reactant or product(s) are coloured colorimetry is useful. Remember to clearly state the colour change.

Tasks
Complete the following:
- Read pages 4 to 6 and take notes including clear diagrams. You might be expected to draw these in examinations.
- Complete the ‘checkpoint’ questions.

Top Tips
Make sure that you understand the following key points:
- Remember practical errors can occur when evolution of gas causes a spray. Take steps to prevent this.
- Some gases are slightly soluble (carbon dioxide) or very soluble (sulphur dioxide) in water so collection over water will lead to errors.
