This module introduces the key ideas of Sociology and the theoretical debates that shape it. These ideas form the bedrock of the subject and will be woven through the rest of the AS and the AL courses. You are not expected to be an expert on these ideas within the first module as your understanding is expected to grow over the course.

As a social science, Sociology tries to reveal how society works. Over the years, a number of different theoretical approaches have developed to help sociologists make sense of the world around them. Some of these theories have been very influential, such as Marxism and feminism, whilst other, such as functionalism, have helped to provide a theoretical foundation to the subject which has influenced Conservative politicians and social policymakers.
