4. Questions about Study Skills and Revision (FAQs)
- What’s the best way to revise for History?
Active revision is always most effective; there’s not a great deal of point in simply re-reading notes and textbooks. It can be effective to make an A3 chart for each unit, with the key facts and issues you want to remember.
But the best practice is undoubtedly in completing past papers; there are plenty of examples on Canvas. Plan some answers, and write others as timed exercises, before checking these against the mark schemes and examiners’ reports. In the Exam Prepation Module on Canvas, at the end of your course, you will also find some general advice on revision in How to Revise for Your Exams.
- How can I improve my grade?
This is a complex question and different for individual students, but the best advice we can give is that you:
-
-
- Complete all the activities in the Programme of Study
- Use all of the resources provided on Canvas
- Learn quotations, dates and statistics
- Make sure you can answer the questions in your textbooks
- Make yourself a glossary of relevant terms, a who’s who of important people and a timeline of crucial events (again, your textbooks will provide a basis for these)
- Keep working on your writing skills throughout the course
- Pay very careful attention to your tutor’s feedback on each assignment and incorporate this into each new assignment
