Topic Three (1.3): Who Will be the Next King of England?
Introduction
- In this section, we move forward in time to one of the biggest events in British history - the Norman invasion of England. You will learn who the different claimants to the throne were and why they each thought that they should be king. You will then look at the battle of Stamford Bridge. Remember to read the content properly before attempting any activities.
Working through your coursebook
- Study all the claimants and talk to your course observer about who you think had the strongest claim and why.
- Make sure you are confident with the narrative (story) of Stamford Bridge by completing the ‘Over to You’ section on page 21. Aim to create a cartoon strip of the battle.
Extension activity for this topic
- As a challenge, you might like to complete the Cause and Consequence section on page 19. You need to make sure you have a clear two-sided argument. Did anyone have a stronger claim? If so, why?
