Topic Five (1.5): The Conquest of England
Introduction
- Winning the Battle of Hastings was not the end of conquering England for William the Conqueror. In fact, it was just the beginning, and it took him three years to bring England completely under his control. In Topic Five you will find out how he did this. Remember to read the content properly before attempting any activities.
Working through your coursebook
- Complete the ‘Over to You’ section on page 35.
- Complete question 1 and discuss question 2 in the ‘Over to You’ section with your observer.
- Use pages 38-39 to complete a mind map about Motte and Bailey castles.
- Complete question 2 in the ‘Over to You’ section on page 41.
- Use pages 42-43 to draw a diagram of the feudal system under William.
- Complete the ‘Over to You’ section on page 45.
- Study the ‘Literacy Focus’ section on page 47 which will help prepare you for your assignment.
Extension activity for this topic
- You might want to complete the ‘Source Analysis’ section on page 35 as a challenge.
- Complete the Significance section on page 41. The skill of significance is very important. Remember that you are not just defining the Domesday book, but explaining how far it was important.
