Topic Two (1.2): Drawing structures

Topics Icon.png Objective

In this topic you will be learning about drawing structures. You will learn:

  • how objects can be broken down into basic shapes and structures such as ellipses and geometrical shapes.
  • how to draw these structures and identify them.
  • how to use directional shading to demonstrate form.

  • From watching the video, you have learnt that an ellipse is the circular shape found in cylindrical objects such as bottles, glasses and vases.
  • Now, spend time practising drawing ellipses. Look at cylindrical objects around you for ideas. Make sure your ellipses stay circular and do not form a point or corners.

  • After watching the video, photograph a series of everyday objects, then print off these images in black and white.
  • Lay tracing paper over the image of the object.
  • Draw the main outline of the object.
  • This will help you identify the structure of these objects, including the ellipses.

Watch the video carefully and practice the techniques that are demonstrated.

  • From the video, you have learnt that directional shading is when your shading follows the 3D shape of the object you are drawing.
  • Practice shading warm-ups, trying to get light and dark tones and blend them together. Use the side of your pencil.
  • Once you feel confident with this technique, try and get your shading go in different directions, such as curves and circles.
  • Try different pencils such as 4B or even graphite sticks.
  • Fill your page will shading exercises. Remember to spray your drawing with an artist’s fixative or hairspray to stop your drawing from smudging.

Review Icon.png Reflecting

Let’s review your learning. How confident are you now with the following?

  • Drawing ellipses
  • Drawing different shapes
  • Using directional shading to show form
  • Being able to identify structure in objects

Consolidate Icon.png Consolidating your learning

  • Go back through your sketch pad.
  • Have you filled up all the spaces in your pages?
  • Could you add some more drawings to the pages?
  • Have you photographed and recorded your work?
  • You can also add comments or thoughts in your sketch pad.
  • Take time to make your sketch pad look great, but remember to show your mistakes as well.
  • If you have worked on paper, stick them into your sketch pad.
