Introduction
In this topic, you will learn numbers 1-31, the verb tener (to have) and how we use this verb in Spanish to talk about age. You will also learn how to talk about your identity, giving information such as your name, surname, age and place of birth. At the end of this topic you will complete your first assignment.

Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:

- Then, complete Exercise 2 on page 12 by answering the questions in English.
- Next, complete Exercise 3 by asking and answering the question ‘How old are you?’ in Spanish. Remember, in Spanish, we don´t say ‘I am 5’, instead we say ‘I have five years’, as if it were a possession or it belongs to us - for example: Tengo cinco años.
- Page 13 Exercise 4: Listen to Audio Track 8 and write down the numbers between 23 and 31 that are missing:

- Complete Exercise 5 on page 13. Listen to Audio Track 9 and write down how old each person is. Be careful, as person ‘e’ and person ‘f’ give you additional information! Don’t forget: in Spanish, to express age we use the verb tener (to have), as if the age was a possession or it belongs to us.

- Read the Patrones y reglas and ¡Arriba, arriba! boxes carefully. You can see that in Spanish the 20s are written in one single word, but from 31 to 99 we need the ‘y’ (and) in the middle. Bearing this in mind, can you answer the question that is asked in the ¡Arriba, arriba! box?
- Page 13 Exercise 6 – read the ID card and work out how to say the items (a-e) in Spanish.
- Page 13 Exercise 7 – make two ID cards of your own, using the information provided.
- Read the Estrategia box on page 13 and learn the rules for when you are completing a listening exercise!
Review
- Complete Exercise 8 on page 13 as an extra activity. Fill in a Carnet de identidad en español with all your details. This will help you familiarise yourself with filling in application forms in Spain, as the questions asked will be very similar.
