Introduction
In this topic, you are going to learn about the francophone world and also learn more about pronunciation in French and sound patterns.
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Page 12 Exercise 1. Study the map of the world. Match the names of the continents in the first box to the correct letters on the map. Then match the French speaking countries in the second box to the numbers. Make sure you know how to say them all in English as well as French!
- Page 12 Exercise 2. Listen to audio Disc 1 Track 10. In which continents is French spoken?

- Write 5 sentences to explain which countries speak French, using the structure you can see in Exercise 3 page 12.
- Now let’s spend some time looking at sound patterns. Read the text box on page 13 about the different sounds. Listen to audio Disc 1 Track 11 and repeat the words that you hear! We recommend that you listen to this track twice and repeat both times.

Pick one of the francophone countries from Exercise 1 and do some independent research about it. Create your own fact file about the country – you can use both English and French to give the information.
