Topic Two (1.2): Core Language A
Objectives for this topic
In this topic you will be meeting some Latin vocabulary and beginning to learn some Latin grammar.
Introduction
In this topic you will begin to learn some Latin vocabulary using the names of six of the Olympian gods. You will start on some basic Latin sentences using nouns and adjectives.
Working through your coursebook
Read pages 17-23. It is really important that you are familiar with the vocabulary in the boxes on each page. Using this vocabulary, translate the sentences in exercise 1.1 on page 18. Notice that word order can vary in Latin from what you might expect in English. You should always put your final version into English word order though. Continue working your way through the exercises 1.2 and 1.3. Why do you think the adjectives on page 10 have different endings?
On page 20 there is a rather grisly story about the god Saturn who was the father of the Olympian gods. Translate this story using the vocabulary you have been using in the exercises. You will find that the sentences you have just been practising will help you with the meanings in this passage. There is some extra vocabulary to help you at the bottom of the page.
On page 21 you meet some adjectives. An adjective describes a noun, and in Latin if the noun is feminine (Iuno, dea, filia etc) then the adjective must have a feminine ending; if the noun is masculine (Iuppiter, deus, filius etc) then the noun must have a masculine ending.
On page 22 you will meet case endings. Read the explanation carefully, then complete the exercise at the bottom of the page.
Exercise 1.8 on page 23 tells the story of Venus and Mars, but this time in Latin. You have already come across this story in topic 1.1.
Support activity for this topic
On pages 34-35 you will find three activities designed to support your language learning in this section. A lot of English words have their roots in Latin. Why do you think this is?
Extension activity for this topic
Here are two more words that derive from Latin. See if you can find out what they mean and explain why they mean that.
English | Latin | Meaning |
vulcanologist | ||
maternal |

Review
Go back over the vocabulary you have been learning and make sure you can recognise the endings that tell you a noun is the object of the verb. Use the list on page 33 to help you.
Make sure you are confident that you can recognise the vocabulary you have learnt so far whether it is the subject or the object. The important thing to remember with Latin is that the nouns change their endings depending on whether they are the subject or object of a verb. Can you recognise these endings easily?
If you are confident that you can do this, then you should go to Assignment 01.
