Introduction
In this module, you will learn how to give directions to places. To do this, we will learn the imperative (a command).
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Page 100 Exercise 1: Listen to Audio Track 21 and match the numbers (1-6) with the letters (a-f). Familiarise yourself with these expressions.
- Next read the ¡Cultura! box on page 100. You could also research other traffic signs you might see in Spanish speaking countries!
- Read the box Patrones y Reglas. Can you write five sentences of your own to show that you understand this rule?
- Next, complete Exercise 2 on page 100. Create three role plays asking and giving directions as instructed. Make sure you practise saying them out loud!
- Read the Estrategia box on page 100 about strategies to use when put on the spot and how to use filler words such as: pues, es que, bueno. Can you include them in the role plays you have just worked on?
- Complete Exercise 3 on page 101. The conversation between Ana and Sadiq is all jumbled up! Can you write it out in the correct order?
- Now complete Exercise 4. Read your correctly ordered conversation from Exercise 3 and answer the questions in full sentences in Spanish.
- Complete Exercise 5 on page 101: Listen to Audio Track 22 and look at the map. Where is each person going? Try to complete this activity without looking at your notes!

Grammar Alert
Read the Gramática box on page 101 about how to form the imperative; the most common way is by using the third person singular of the present tense (beber/ bebe, bailar/baila, estudiar/estudia, limpiar/limpia, escribir/escribe). Then complete Exercise 5 on page 111 to practice! This will also introduce you to some common irregular verbs in the imperative.
