What does the course cover? The programme of study

On the Wolsey Hall Year 8 Art and Design course you will work your way through six modules which follow the Cambridge Lower Secondary Curriculum.

  • Before Module One, there is an introductory Skype call with your tutor.
  • At the end of Module Three, there is a mid-course review.
  • At the end of Module Six, there is an end-of-course review.

The course framework is based on students having about 1.5 hours of Art and Design per week.

Before you complete Assignment 1, you will be asked if you would be willing to share any outstanding work you produce in an on-line virtual gallery. This gallery will only be accessible to students on this course.

Module One: Drawing Fundamentals – Linear Perspectives

Module Overview

In Module 1 you will learn about perspective. You will complete a series of drawing studies and learn about one-point and two-point perspective in Art.

Topic One (1.1): One-point warm-up exercises

  • 1.1a one-point perspective warm-up exercises;
  • 1.1b drawing one-point perspective warm-up exercises;
  • 1.1c more perspective warm-ups and photography research.

Topic Two (1.2): Two-point warm-up exercises

  • 1.2a drawing two-point perspective warm-ups;
  • 1.2b learning to use two-point perspective (linear perspective).

Topic Three (1.3): Drawing interiors

  • 1.3a using two-point perspective to draw interiors;
  • 1.3b adding shading and detail to your drawing.

Topic Four (1.4): Watercolour study using two-point perspective

  • 1.4 watercolour study of linear perspective.

Module Two: Colour Theory and Painting

Module Overview

In Module 2 you will learn about the importance of understanding colour theory as well as tone. You will also learn about base tones, as well as adding stencilling to your work.  

Topic One (2.1): Colour theory

  • 2.1a creating a colour wheel;
  • 2.1b mixing colour (1).

Topic Two (2.2): Brush techniques and tone

  • 2.2a brush techniques and blending tone;
  • 2.2b mixing colour (2);
  • 2.2c researching colours and planning your composition.

Topic Three (2.3): Adding effect

  • 2.3a drawing out your design on canvas and adding base tones;
  • 2.3b adding details and using stencils.

Module Three: Exploring Printmaking – Stencils

Module Overview

In Module 3 you will experiment with techniques used in stencilling. You will learn about making patterns and printing using stencils.

Module Four: Three-dimensional Sculpture – Making Dragons

Module Overview

In Module 4 you will learn how to use hot flour paste to make dragons.  You will learn the techniques necessary to make your figure look as realistic as possible. 

Topic One (4.1): Making 3D objects

  • 4.1a how to make hot flour paste for your sculpture;        
  • 4.1b drawing and designing your sculpture and making the smaller parts;
  • 4.1c making the arms and legs of the sculpture.

Topic Two (4.2): Adding papier-mâché to your sculpture

  • 4.2a making the parts of the sculpture and adding flour paste;
  • 4.2b working on your dragon.

Topic Three (4.3): Building your sculpture

  • 4.3a putting all the pieces of the dragon together;
  • 4.3b adding texture to the dragon;
  • 4.3c making dragon wings and teeth.

Module Five: Cartoon Animation and Composition

Module Overview

In Module 5 you will learn the basic skills of cartoon animation and composition.

Topic One (5.1): Viewpoints and composition in animation

Topic Four (5.4): Researching different styles of comics

Module Six: Experimenting with Natural and Ephemeral Materials

Module Overview

In Module 6 you will learn about creating art that is ephemeral or temporary.

Topic One (6.1):  Experimenting with natural and ephemeral materials

Topic Two (6.2): Creating weaving frames from natural materials

Topic Three (6.3): Making masks using natural and found materials

Topic Four (6.4): Researching indigenous masks
