Topic Three (1.3): Drawing interiors
Background information
Architects and interior designers use linear perspective when they are designing buildings and interiors. It is also used in many other aspects of design.
Objective
In this lesson you will learn how to use linear perspective to draw interior spaces. You will also learn:
- How to apply two-point perspective when drawing the interior of a room
- How to use vanishing points as a reference when calculating scale and angles of furniture, as well as other features of a room
Equipment Required
- A range of pencils: HB, 2B and 4B
- A large sheet of A3 paper
- A long 30cm or 40cm ruler
- Artist’s fixative or hairspray
Topic 1.3a - Using two-point perspective to draw interiors
Watch the video carefully and practise the techniques that are demonstrated.
- Watch the video carefully.
- Now, in your own work, use the two vanishing points continuously as reference points.
- It may take lots of practice to master this skill.
- Start by drawing lightly and keep your composition simple.
- When you are more confident, you can add more detail.
Topic 1.3b - Adding shading and detail to your drawing
Watch the video carefully and practise the techniques that are demonstrated.
- Watch the video carefully and put it on a slower speed if necessary.
- You are going to draw a larger composition using the two-point perspective.
- Once you are confident with your drawing you can add shading and detail.
- Your shading can also follow the lines of perspective to create more of a feeling of space.
Reflecting
Let’s review your learning. How confident are you now with the following?
- Understanding two point perspective
- Being able to use two point perspective to draw interior spaces
- Adding shading and detail to an extended drawing composition
Consolidating your learning
- Go back through your sketchpad.
- Have you filled up all the spaces in your pages?
- Could you add some more drawings to the pages?
- Have you photographed and recorded your work?
- You can also add comments or thoughts in your sketchpad.
- Take time to make your sketchpad look great, but remember to show your mistakes as well.
- If you have worked on paper, stick them into your sketchpad.
