Tips on French Pronunciation

French pronunciation is tricky!  Don’t worry if you feel you haven’t quite grasped it, but also don’t stop listening and trying!

Accent and pronunciation are not quite the same thing.  You can have a good accent and still pronounce things wrong because you are not following the pronunciation rules.  Try to see if you can identify patterns as you listen to spoken French.

For help pronouncing individual words, go to Google Translate ‘French to English’ dictionary, write the French word in the box and click on the megaphone symbol. It will say the word to you. Alternatively, the Forvo website lets you hear different native speakers pronounce the word.

However, there are common patterns which will help you to pronounce words correctly.  Eventually you will be able to pronounce words correctly that you haven’t met before because they will follow the patterns you have learnt.  Some of these are below.

First, some common difficulties:

  • qu – is not pronounced [kw] as in queen in English. No ‘w’ sound but is just [k] e.g. que, qui, quand.

(However, quoi is pronounced [kwa] – but this is not because of the ‘u’ but because of the ‘oi’ which is pronounced [wa])

  • ‘h’ is not pronounced in French. L’homme is therefore pronounced [lomm], j’habite is [jabeet] (see pronunciation for ‘j’ below), hier has no ‘h’ sound.
  • -ent at the end of the ‘ils/elles’ form of the present tense – is NEVER pronounced e.g. ils regardent, elles parlent. [regard / parl]. This means il regarde and ils regardent are pronounced exactly the same.
  • ‘-e’ at the end of words generally means that you pronounce the letter before it, (whereas if there is no ‘e’, you often don’t pronounce the last letter) e.g. petit (you don’t sound the ‘t’) vs. petite (you do), intelligent intelligente etc. This often signals to people whether you are talking about something masculine or feminine.  

NB: Try not to pronounce things as in English just because they are spelled similarly or the same way, e.g. option – is not [opshun] but [opsyo’], télévision - is not [telyvizhun] but [télévizyo’], six is [seess].

  • Une paire de boucles d’oreilles, treize bêches et seize chaises sèchent au soleil.
  • On ne verra jamais un aigle beige jouer avec une baleine dans un canoë, sur la terre out même sure une autre planète, mais ça vaudrait bien la peine !

  • lieu, jeu, pleut creux – words that end in a consonant which is silent such as c,d,s,t,x,
  • All words ending in ‘euze’, ‘euze’, ‘eusent’
  • Jeudi j’ai mangé un généreux déjeuner qui m’a rendu tout joyeux.
  • Quand il pleut mes cheveux soyeux ne sont plus radieux. S’il ne cesse de pleuvoir, je vais devoir faire une queue.

  • Un jeune pêcheur seul qui meurt de froid au bord d’un fleuve rêve de devenir chanteur.
  • Un boxeur sans cœur et de mauvaise humeur s’entraine neuf heures à l’extérieur avec fureur.

  • Une citation dans un dictionnaire n’est pas toujours une bonne définition.
