Introduction
In this module, you will learn how to express pain and hurt.
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Page 16 Exercise 1: Listen to Audio Track 10 and the people describing where they hurt. Which body parts do they mention? Be careful – they may say more than one!
- Read the Gramática box on page 16 about the verb doler and then complete Exercise 2 on page 16. Read the mini dialogues and fill in the gaps with the words in coloured boxes.
- Read the box Patrones y reglas: read about the word dedo - it’s used for both fingers and toes in Spanish!
- Page 17 Exercise 3: Time to practice your speaking! Answer the question ¿Qué te duele? - it would be great if you could add details as explained in the ¡Arriba, arriba! box.
- Page 17 Exercise 4: Listen to Audio Track 11 and complete the table with the body part that hurts and the length of time it has been hurting for.
- Page 17 Exercise 5: Read the messages from Gregorio and Susana, then decide who the statements refer to.
Review
Read Estrategia on page 17 about re-using expressions and grammar points that you have already learnt. Then do Exercise 7 on page 18: Translate Gregorio's paragraph from Exercise 5 into English.

Extension activity for this topic
Using the new vocabulary about parts of the body, write down three sentences using me duele; you can add extra information using some adverbs of frequency such as siempre, nunca, a veces.
For example: Siempre me duele la cabeza cuando leo mucho.
