Introduction
In this topic, you will learn how to talk about jobs and careers. You will also learn how to formulate the future tense of regular verbs, and how to understand a piece of Spanish prose.
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Page 62 Exercise 1: Listen to Carlos and Rosana’s conversation in Audio Disc 1 Track 45. Then choose suitable jobs for them from the options given (a-f), according to their skills and ambitions. Can you work out what all the jobs are in English?
- Now read the very important Patrones y reglas box on page 62. Remember these very important rules when talking about jobs.
- Page 62 Exercise 2: If you feel confident, you can also have a go at this writing activity. Otherwise, you can do it at the end. Did you notice that there was one job in Exercise 1 that wasn’t mentioned? Write a short description of a person who might be interested in this type of job.
- Page 63 Exercise 3: Read the pros and cons of certain jobs and match them with what they mean in English.
- Page 63 Exercise 4: Can you answer this question for yourself? If you don’t want to use the future tense, you could also use Quiero ser + job (without un or una). Try to give a reason why by using one of the examples in Exercise 3.
- Read the Estrategia box on page 62 about how to identify difficult vocabulary and tenses in literature. Don’t be too worried if you feel that can’t understand everything – the key is to break down the information that is in front of you and infer meaning (we saw this in a previous lesson).
Review
Page 63 Exercise 5: Read this extract from the short story El gran lobo, then choose the three correct statements. Before you start, read the Estrategia box on the same page for tips and hints on tackling this type of writing. If you prefer, you can also listen to the story on Audio Disc 1 Track 48.

Grammar Alert
Read the Gramática box on page 63 about forming the future tense in Spanish (‘I will’ or ‘I shall’). To form the future, we add the ending to the infinitive of all the -ar, -er and -ir verbs, for example: hablar + é, comer + é, vivir + é. There is one set of endings for all verbs: -ar, -er or -ir. It is very important that you learn the endings in the box on page 63 off by heart.
See page 147 in the Claro 2 coursebook for irregular future forms.
When you are ready, have another go at practising the use of the future tense on Language Nut in the Grammar and Verbs Section:
- Grammar/Future Tense
You will have played some of these games in a previous lesson, but, as they say, practice makes perfect!
Then complete Exercise 4 on page 67.
