Introduction
In this topic, you will learn how to talk about the internet and your use of social media. You will also learn more about forming negative expressions, and about how Spanish has borrowed English words, especially technology words like email and internet.
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Page 52 Exercise 1: Read each sentence carefully then match each one to the correct image.
- Page 52 Exercise 2: Can you translate the sentences from Exercise 1 into English?
- Page 52 Exercise 3: Now complete this listening activity on Audio Disk 1 Track 35. Remember to copy the table into your notebook before you start. You may want to stop the audio between each person to give you time to write down your answers.
- Page 53 Exercise 4: Can you answer each of these questions using a time expression? Before you start, look at the time expressions you came across in the sentences in Exercise 1. Use these to help you.
- Page 53 Exercise 5: Read what Pascual, Gabriela and Pamela have to say about their use of technology. Remember to look up new words and make a note of them. Then read the sentences underneath and decide who says each one.
- Read the Estrategia box on page 53 about how Spanish has borrowed many technological words from English, e.g. email, internet. One important point to remember is that you should pronounce these words with a Spanish accent! Try! Can you do it? Try saying the following with a Spanish accent: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Netflix
- Listen to Audio Disk 1 Track 36 for how to pronounce the most popular words related to social media in Spanish.
Review
Exercise 6: What are your favourite apps? Try to write a short paragraph of around 40 words, including the following information:
- the names of your favourite apps
- what’s good about these apps
- an app you don’t use and why
Take ideas from Exercise 5 and don’t be scared about lifting vocabulary or short phrases from the text and using them in your own writing. You can start with: Mi aplicación favorita es…

Grammar Alert
Read the Gramática box on page 52 about negative expressions in Spanish. Try to use these in your writing. It’s important to vary your language as much as possible. Using these will help you sound more Spanish! Why not write three sentences of your choice with each one including one of the negative expressions mentioned: nadie, ya no, tampoco. Try to follow the pattern of the examples given.
