What to Get Ready

Introduction
Last lesson, you learned about how we move on and across lands and how transport has changed over time.
This week, we will be looking at the most popular modes of transport in our local area. Next lesson, we will be comparing this to how people used to travel where we live.
Main Activity
This week’s lessons are in two parts. Today, you will conduct a survey of the types of transport that you typically see in your local area. Next lesson, you will be creating a fact file of the transport that you saw and compare it to a mode of transport used in the past.
You will need to take your printed off Transport Survey
Download Transport Survey and a clipboard. Find a safe, local area where you can carry out the survey. You need to spend no longer than 30 minutes doing the survey. Observe the vehicles which pass by and record what you notice by filling in the chart either with ticks or by tallying.
Apply
Can you spot the different types of transport? Which is the most popular? You can use a tally system here or just tick the box if you prefer.
Challenge
Look up or in the water too! Can you spot any aircraft or boats?
What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your child for the skills they are using.
For example:
“You were able to use a tally to count how many lorries you saw, well done.”
“You noticed a canal boat going past - nicely done!”
