Topic (1.1): Welcome to Geography
Objectives for this topic
By the end of this topic you should be able to:
- explain the terms: physical geography, human geography, environmental geography, change, impact, inequality, poverty, extreme poverty;
- give examples of at least two topics from each of human, physical and environmental geography;
- list three themes that run through geography;
- give one example of a natural change on earth.
Introduction
In this first topic you will learn what geography is, how it relates to all of us and the planet and what you will study as you go through the course.
Working through your coursebook
- Geography is a huge and diverse subject. To find out why some people love geography, watch the following video:

- Log into Kerboodle and complete the first lesson. But before you do watch the video and read the notes below:

The following notes should help you work through the lesson:

- Activity 1 - geog.brainteasers are questions which have no right or wrong answer. Have a think about the question and maybe start by asking yourself:
- Do humans have a right to Earth? Why?
- Are country borders real? Do they matter? Why?
- What about animals and their right to Earth? You could discuss it with a family member.
- Activity 5 - Based on the three big themes in geography: change, impact and inequality, identify questions for each and add them to the table. You could then highlight each question according to whether it represents physical, human or environmental geography.
- Activity 1 - geog.brainteasers are questions which have no right or wrong answer. Have a think about the question and maybe start by asking yourself:
- geog.1, pages 6-7 – read through these pages and complete all the ‘Your turn’ activities.
- Make sure you understand the different strands of geography by completing the worksheet ‘The Three Types of Geography’.
