Module One

In Module 1 of Year 8 you will learn just how important the Roman gods were in everyday life and how Romans, both rich and poor, made every effort to gain divine favour and avoid being punished. We hear about how sacrifices were conducted and how Romans asked their gods to punish others, as well as how they viewed the afterlife. These are all big questions which, for many people, are not fully resolved to this day.

You will also be learning more Latin vocabulary and increasing your understanding of cases and tenses. From now on you begin to be able to understand more complex sentences and you will start with the imperfect tense of sum and its compound possum, as well as some other common irregular verbs – fero, volo and nolo.  You will also learn how to ask direct questions and two new cases, the genitive (possessive) and the dative (indirect object). As always keep looking at how the words are grouped together to make a sentence. Patterns are really helpful in Latin. Carry on looking for Latin words that still survive in some form in English; these derivations are helpful in your writing for lots of other subjects that you are studying.

You will start in topic one by working through the reading about 'Favour and Punishment' in Chapter 4 of De Romanis 1. Use the instructions and commentary on Canvas, as well as the questions in the book, to guide you through this reading and help you to digest it. You will then move on in topic two to the language work. Work through the exercises in the book as instructed. You can check your answers to the language exercises using the answer sheets at the end of the module.

When you have completed all the work in the module, and feel confident that you can remember the language and the background information you have been reading, you are ready to complete the assignment and submit it to your tutor
