Topic Three (1.3): Religion
Objectives for this topic
- To investigate the links between the Islamic and the Western World as well as the belief systems of the Vikings, Christian beliefs and religion in the Ottoman Empire.
Introduction
In this topic we will be looking at links between the Western and Islamic world, as well as the Crusades. We will also look at the belief systems of the Vikings, Christian beliefs and challenges to the Christian religion.
Working through your coursebook
Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:
- Read page 36 on links between the Western and Islamic world and then complete both of the Review and Understand activities on page 36.

- Read about Viking Gods and then about Christian belief in Medieval Europe, both on page 37. You then need to answer activity one of the Review and Understand activities. You can use this sheet:

- On page 38 and 39 read about religion in the Ottoman Empire and answer question 2 of the Review and Understand. You can use the same worksheet as above.
- Read about challenging the Church in Renaissance Italy and answer question 3 of the Review and Understand, again using the same worksheet if you wish.
- Once you have completed this section have a go at question 4 of the Apply and Analyse. You need to step back from what you have read and consider why religion might have contributed to conflict between East and West.

- Research significant individuals from both the Western and Islamic worlds. Outline their role and contribution to their societies. You could choose from: Charlemagne, Leonardo Da Vinci, Leif Erikson, Suleiman I.
