Part 1

  1. Ask your child to review their learning so far. What are databases used for? What is the difference between a field and a record? What methods can you use to sort data?
  2. For this part of the lesson, your child will consider what makes different charts useful, and how charts can be used to compare data.
  3. Ask your child, why do we use graphs and charts to display information. Refer to the images on Resource Sheet 3.1 Download Resource Sheet 3.1and decide what question the graph / chart could be answering. What title would your child give the different graphs / charts (activity 1, first question)?
  4. Now look at Resource Sheet 3.1 Download Resource Sheet 3.1and work through the different images of charts. This time ask your child to think about which chart answers the questions best and why (activity 1, second question).
  5. Finally, use Video Resource Creating charts and new databases video Links to an external site. and / or Resource Sheet 3.1 Download Resource Sheet 3.1 which demonstrates how to create charts and graphs to answer different questions. Remind your child to think carefully about which type of chart or graph will answer the question most effectively (activity 2).

Part 2

  1. In this final part, your child will learn how to use a real-life database (e.g. www.expedia.com Links to an external site. ). They will become travel agents and based on different scenarios, they will ask questions and find answers. They will then present their answers.
  2. Use Video Resource Creating charts and new databases video and Resource Sheet 3.1 Download Resource Sheet 3.1to discover how to use an online database.
  3. Based upon the different scenarios, ask your child to complete different searches and come up with a range of responses that they could present to a potential customer (they can use the PowerPoint template Download PowerPoint template to complete this activity). They must also decide upon their own recommendation and give reasons why.
