In this topic, you will explore the importance of English as a subject. You will also begin to explore the typical structure of adventure stories and relate this to your own reading.

  • Read the introduction on pages 8 and 9. It is difficult to define English as a subject but you use it every day. This course will help you develop your skills as a reader, writer and speaker.
  • Read pages 12-13. It is important you understand that genres often have a typical structure such as the example given in the book (The Hero’s Journey).
  • Now you will investigate how a writer builds up expectations of an adventure story through character and setting. Read pages 14-15 and watch the Hobbit trailer Links to an external site..
  • Make notes as you watch on what your expectations will be for this adventure film.
  • It is important to establish characters fully. Writers can do this through many different (and often subtle) ways. Here are some examples: through the way their appearance is described, the way they speak and what they say (dialogue), how they act and behave, what they think, and how other characters view them. Make detailed notes about both Gandalf and Bilbo. The next time you read a book, also look out for this.
  • Before completing the Spag work students are advised to watch the Connectives video and complete the quiz about connectives Links to an external site..
