Topic Two (1.2): Different text types
Introduction
In this topic, you will be exploring how dialogue, action and images are used to develop characterisation in a graphic novel text.
Working through your course book
- Begin by reading pages 16-17 in your course book. Complete the activities as you come to them. You are going to be writing a script for Question 3. Use [MO 1] Resource 1.1.pdf Download [MO 1] Resource 1.1.pdf Worksheet 1.1 as an example of how to set out a script correctly if you are unsure.
- Now read and do the activities on pages 18-19. You are going to see how danger is conveyed in a poem. Poets can use many different techniques to create different effects. Here, Bradfield uses imagery (metaphors and extended metaphors). This means she describes something as something else, not meant to be taken literally. For example: 'You’re a star.'

Assignment
Before you move on to Section 5 in Ignite 1, please now complete Assignment 01A. This is a series of questions based around an extract from ‘Alice in Wonderland'.
Reading for pleasure
What are you reading at the moment? To complement this topic you may like to try a graphic novel such as Bone by Jeff Smith or the Bunny vs Monkey series by Jamie Smart. If you've enjoyed a book lately, why not leave a book review for other students?
