In this topic, you will learn how to count all the way up to 1000. You will also discover the personal pronouns in German and how to use them. You will start to develop exam skills, such as working out the meaning of new words by looking for similarities with English words.

Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:

  • Complete exercise 1 on page 18: read the German sentences on the left (1-4) and match them to the English sentences on the right (a-d).
  • Complete exercise 2 on page 18: put the numbers in the correct order and say them aloud.

Extra: try counting in tens to 100 and then in hundreds to 1000 from memory, to see if you can remember all the numbers

  • Complete exercise 3 on page 18: listen to the audio and check that everything is correct.

  • Complete exercise 4 on page 18: match up the numbers with the German words

Extra: to challenge yourself further, how about writing up some really tricky numbers?

  • Complete exercise 5 on page 19: listen to the audio as you read the texts. Choose the correct date for each gap (a-d).

  • Complete exercise 6 on page 19: write out the sentences from exercise 1 in the ‘er’ form. Be sure to check the verb ending is corresponding with the pronoun you use (e.g. ‘er heißt’)
  • Complete exercise 7 on page 19: choose one of the people listed and write out their details using the correct personal pronoun (er/sie).

Look up a famous person from Germany, Austria or Switzerland and write a short account about them in German, following the examples from exercise 5 on page 19.

Extra: Why not design a poster about them? For example, you could add a photo or a picture.
