Module One Introduction
Welcome to the first module of your Year 8 English course!
Module One is all about creative writing skills. You will explore the mystery genre including reading some extracts from classic mystery stories such as Sherlock Holmes and modern writers such as Philip Pullman.
The main objectives for the module will be to learn about how to develop your descriptive and narrative writing, focusing on how to create suspense and tension. You will also learn about genre and the typical features of a mystery story.
Both assignments in this module will be marked using the writing assessment criteria. You will need to demonstrate the following key skills:
- Clear organisation and structure in your writing, including using paragraphs appropriately.
- Accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- A wide range of vocabulary and techniques such as imagery.
- A range of sentence structures and punctuation.
You should work through each topic, reading your course book, completing the activities and watching any videos. Remember that if you need more support you should refer to the important course resources or if you feel ready for an extra challenge then do complete all the stretch activities in Ignite 2.
Once you have completed Topic 1.2, you can then complete Assignment One A. Assignment One B should be completed at the end of the module. Do read the assignment guidance sheets before completing these modules as they show you some examples of how to approach assignments.

Remember that there are two assignments for this module: You should complete Assignment One A after Topic 1.2 and Assignment One B after Topic 1.5.
