Topic Two (1.2): Vocabulary, inference and deduction
Introduction
In this topic, you will use inference and deduction to explore layers of meaning. You will also explore how vocabulary and subordinate clauses can be used to create suspense.
Working through your course book
- Please read and work through pages 14-15 of Ignite 2. Complete the activities as you come to them.
- Use the PowerPoint Inference and Implied Meaning Download Inference and Implied Meaning to help you to practise the skill of inference in your own writing before attempting the activities on pages 14 and 15. The idea is to show, not tell, the reader, in order to make your writing more interesting.
- Now read through and do the activities on pages 16-17 of Ignite 2.
- For Question 2, remember to find words or phrases which use interesting adjectives and verbs. Think about why the author chose them and what the intended effects are. What does it help you to imagine? How does it add to the tense and unsettling atmosphere?
Spelling, punctuation and grammar
Watch the Prefixes and Suffixes video.
Now read and complete your SPG workbook pages 4–11. Answers can be checked on pages 78 and 79. This will help you revise suffixes. If you need any help whilst completing the exercises in the workbook, remember that there are Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Guides (SPG Guides) in the important course resources.
