Topic Three (1.3): La parole aux collégiens
Reading
Read pages 10 and 11 of your coursebook and complete Exercises 1-8. If you need assistance translating the text or understanding how to complete the tasks, please read the instructions below.
Grammar
Look at the box containing the verbs pouvoir, vouloir and devoir. These are the infinitives of verbs meaning to be able to (can), to want to and to have to. If you want to say what it is that you can, want to or have to do, you have to put the next verb in the infinitive e.g. je peux lire – I can read, je veux écrire – I want to write and je dois travailler – I have to work.
Grammar
Read the box at the bottom page 11 on the right. Even though it looks tiny, it is important. It is telling you about personal subject pronouns, that is, the words for ‘I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they’. In particular, it is pointing out that ‘on’ can mean ‘one’ (as in ‘people’) but it can also mean ‘we’. However, it is always conjugated just like the il/elle forms of a verb.

Pages 10 and 11
Exercise 1.

Exercise 2. ‘vrai’ means ‘true’ and ‘faux’ means ‘false. They are adjectives, which is why when they refer to the feminine plural word ‘phrases’, they become ‘vraies’ and ‘fausses’.
Exercise 3. A and B here indicate that this is a pair activity. If you are working on your own, you could just read through the text and underline all the forms of the verbs indicated that you can find. N.B. ‘à voix haute’ literally means ‘in a high/loud voice’ but it is best translated as ‘out loud’.
Exercise 4. See how many points you can score by using the three modal verbs.
Exercise 5a.

Here you need to match the photos to two of the people speaking in the speech bubbles.
Exercise 5b. ‘Relisez’ comes from the verb ‘relire’ which comes from the verb ‘lire’ – to read, so it means ‘Re-read’.
Exercise 6. Based on 5b, what do you think ‘Réécoutez’ means? Here you fill in the numbered gaps in the speech bubbles for Jules, Camille, Yasmina and Tarek by using words in the green Vocabulaire box. If you don’t know what the words mean, look them up in on this site Links to an external site..
Exercise 7a. Here you need to re-read the speech bubbles and work out what all the children answer to the four questions A-D.
Exercise 7b. If you don’t have a partner, answer these questions with respect to yourself.
Exercise 8. ‘À vous la parole’ means ‘Your turn to speak’, though this is actually a writing exercise as you will see.
