(1.2) Ejercicio 3, página 14
Actividad preparatoria / Thinking ahead
Before you have a look at the big grammar box, reflect on what you already know about verbs in the present tense. How many verbal groups and conjugations exist in Spanish? Try and find a couple of examples of each group.
Gramática / Grammar
Read through and analyse the grammar box that explains about the present tense in Spanish. You have an introduction to the present tense and when to use it. You can see there are three verbal groups (verbs ending in -ar, -er and -ir)
NOTE: When conjugating a verb, most forms require you to remove the -ar, -er, -ir endings. So practicar is practic-ending. Comer is com-ending. Vivir is viv-ending.
You have some examples of regular verbs and irregular verbs and, at the bottom, some reflexive verbs. These are things you do to yourself, used mainly when talking about describing a routine – ‘Vestirse’ (me visto - I get dressed (myself!)).
Now, go back to Exercise 1 on page 13, and underline all the verbs you can find (there are 17). Write them down in your notebook in a two-part grid and next to them include all their infinitives (the “to” form of the verb: Vivir – To live).
For example,
Luego me pongo el pijama y doy las buenas noches a mis padres.
Me pongo - Ponerse
Doy - Dar
If you want, you can add an extra section for the meaning of those verbs.
Finally, order all those verbs and activities in chronological order (what happens first in a day? What is the last thing one does before going to bed?).
¿Quieres hacer más? / Want to do more?
In your notebook, conjugate all the verbs you have worked with in this unit to practise your present tense endings. Por ejemplo:
- (Yo) desayuno
- (Tú) desayunas
- (Él/Ella) desayuna
- (Nosotros/nosotras) desayunamos
- (Vosotros/vosotras) desayunáis
- (Ellos/ellas) desayunan
