Topic Three (1.3): Spoken language

 Introduction

In this topic, you will be exploring how spoken language can reflect a character’s background and social status. You will also draw on knowledge of literary techniques, style and structure to draft a poem.

 Working through your course book

  • Begin by reading pages 42-43 in Ignite 3. Complete the activities as you come to them. The extract you will read (from Great Expectations) uses dialect to show the character’s social status. Dialect refers to informal words which are used in a specific geographical area. Accents refer to the way someone pronounces a word or phrase. You may find examples of both in this extract.
  • Now read and do the activities on pages 44-45. This will be your first attempt at writing your own poem in this module. At first this can seem daunting, so it would be helpful to plan or mind map some ideas first of all. You will be writing about an experience or event you have shared with a friend. Try to use the following prompt to help you plan before you write. If you can’t remember all the details, you can use creative licence (meaning you can make some details up!).
    • What happened that day.
    • Where you were and who was there.
    • What the weather setting was like.
    • Appeal to the senses - write a list of things you remembering seeing, the sounds you heard, etc.
    • How you felt that day.
  • Remember that poetry doesn’t have to rhyme and this is your chance to be creative. You may wish to use techniques such as similes or metaphors, but this is up to you.

Reading for pleasure

What are you reading at the moment? To complement this topic you may like to try Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. If you've enjoyed a book lately, why not leave a book review for other students?
