Topic Four (1.4): Diversity in poetry
Introduction
You are going to be exploring how repetition and diversity of imagery can build up poetic structure. You will also understand how traditional forms can be adapted to convey a contemporary message.
Working through your course book
- Begin by reading pages 46-47 in Ignite 3. Complete the activities as you come to them.
- You can check your answers here Download here.
- Now read and do the activities on pages 48-49. This is a very dramatic retelling of a traditional fairy tale (Rumpelstiltskin). For another stretch activity, try writing a poem retelling another fairy tale. Perhaps try writing Cinderella but ending it differently, such as Cinderella not wanting to marry Prince Charming but wanting to travel the world instead! You can watch a cartoon version of Cinderella here:

Extension activity for this topic
If you would like an extra challenge, you could write your own version of the poem on page 47 using the same format and tone.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar
At the end of this module you will be assessed on your poetry writing, but your tutor will still be checking for correct spelling and grammar (although you may use punctuation for different reasons). Revise grammar basics by working through pages 55–57 in the SPG workbook. The answers can be checked on pages 89–90. If you need any help whilst completing the exercises in the workbook, remember that there are Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar Guides (SPG Guides) in the important course resources.
