WhatGetReady.png What to Get Ready

Set up a washing line with moveable numbers from 1-20. To do this, print out the Download 1-20 Washing Line Numbers.

Peg these numbers to a line of string, attached to a table or wall. Look at Download Examples of Number Washing Lines for help.

Alternatively you could lay the Download 1-20 Number Cards

on to the floor.

Have a friendly or familiar puppet to hand.

Introduction Icon.png Introduction

Say the numbers from 1 to 20 in order, pointing to the numbers on the washing line as you do so.

Ask your child to close their eyes whilst you swap two numbers on the washing line.

Then ask them, ‘Which two have moved? How can you tell?’

Repeat with two different numbers.

Ask your child to close their eyes again. Choose a ‘number stealer’ puppet to remove all of the cards except 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20, but not the pegs. The puppet has stolen some of our numbers! Explain that it will give them back if they work out where these fit on the number line.

Next, shuffle the removed cards. Then take one at a time and ask your child what the number is and then ask them to describe (not point!) where to place them on the washing line. The puppet can then return that number.

Show your child the 20-bead bar and count all of the beads moving them one at a time as you do so, so they see 1 being added from right to left as you count them.

Show numbers of beads on the 20-bead bar, for example, 5, 10, 15, 20, 6, 11, 19, and ask your child to say how many you are showing.

Can they write this number down?

Check the written number formation and show them how to form the number if necessary.

Ask: ‘How are you working it out? Do we need to count from the beginning of the bar?’

Encourage your child to recognise numbers such as 5 without counting, building up to seeing 6 as 1 more than a group of 5.

Ask your child to use a 20-bead string to show you 5, 10, 15, 20, 6, 11, 12, 16 and 19 beads. Are they using groups of 5 to help?

This video demonstrates using the bead string to count the numbers 5, 10, 15 and 20, and modelling the formation of the numbers.

Give your child the number cards 1–20, not in order.

Challenge them to sort through the numbers to find the number 10.

Tell your child that they now have to sort the numbers into those more than 10 and those less than 10. Once they have done this, they should then place the number 10 in the middle and order the numbers 1 to 9, and then 11 to 20 either side to form a line of numbers from 1 to 20.

Ask your child to count along their number line to check the numbers are in the correct order and give them time to make any changes if needed.

Your child should then close their eyes while you swap two numbers. When they open their eyes they have to work out which numbers have been swapped. How do they know this? Can they describe to you where each should be without moving the number or pointing to it?

Once the number lines are back to being in the right order, repeat the task.
