Sample Week: Lesson 5
Place Value – Numbers to 100
OBJECTIVES:
To recognise the place value of each digit in a 2-digit number.
RESOURCES:
100 bead string | Additions and subtractions worksheet | Place value cards
VOCABULARY:
tens | ones | number sentence | partition | partitioning | add | subtract
What to Get Ready
Print out the Place value cards Download Place value cards. Cut out the cards which show the tens numbers (10, 20, 30, and so on) and the ones numbers (1, 2, 3, and so on). You will be using these cards regularly during the course.
Introduction
Ask your child to show 40 on their 100 bead string.
Then ask them to show 48. Ask what they did to find this number (they pushed another 8 beads along).
Ask, ‘What number sentence can we write?’ Answer: 40 + 8 = 48.
Repeat with other 2-digit numbers.
Say, ‘Show me 64. Now take away the last 4. How many are left?’
Write a matching number sentence: 64 – 4 = 60. Read this together.
Ask your child to use place value cards to make a number.
Say, ‘Find 30. Find 6.’
Then ask, ‘What is 30 add 6?’
Record 30 + 6 = 36. Read the number sentence together.
Say: ‘Take away 6. What is left? What did you do?’
Record 36 – 6 = 30. Read this sentence together.
Pick up the 6 card again to make 36.
This video demonstrates adding and subtracting like this using a beaded number line.
Say, ‘This time take away 30. What do you have left? What number sentence could we write?’
Repeat, using place value cards to add and subtract multiples of 10 and 1, combining two cards or leaving one card.
Say: ‘These are really easy; we don’t need to do any counting on or back!’
Extra Challenge
Ask your child to answer place value additions and subtractions on the Additions and subtractions worksheet. Download Additions and subtractions worksheet.
Remind them that they don’t need to count on or back in ones to solve these!
