Warm Up
Make up a rhythm based on your favourite food. For example ‘I like, pot ta toes, only if its mashed.’ Nothing is wrong!
Introduction
Explain to your child that today they will be learning some new pieces on the recorder, but also a new note high D. They will also look at a dotted crotchet.
Main Activity
Have a look at the piece 'The Zippi' in the Recorder Magic Book 2, page 5. Can they point out the dotted crotchet? Explain that when you have a dot on a crotchet it adds an extra half a beat. Dotted crotchets last for 1 and ½ beats. When followed by a quaver we call this a dotted rhythm.
Allow your child to sight read the piece.

Have a look at the explanation for high D Recorder Magic Book 2, page 6, remember to take their thumb off the back so that the recorder is balancing in 3 places - The D finger, the mouth and the right hand thumb on the back. Practice going from C to D. They should be able to recognise D on the music using the sentence - 'Every Good Boy Does Fine'. Remember to go from the lowest line upwards.
Allow your child to sight read ‘Fanfare for High D’ and ‘High Di Ho’ in Recorder Magic Book 2, page 7.
