    In this topic, you will learn about the different ways of greeting people.

    Please work through the following sections in your coursebook, completing all listed exercises:

    • Page 20, Exercise 1a – On your own or with an adult or friend, practise saying the words and phrases.
    • Page 20, Exercise 1b – Do you know which ones you would use when you meet someone and which ones you would use at the end of the conversation?
    • Page 20, Exercise 1c – Which of these phrases would you use with friends or family? Do you know why? Which ones would you use with your tutor?
    • Page 20, Exercise 2 – Now that you are familiar with some key vocabulary, let’s complete an exercise on how people greet each other in different countries. It’s very interesting! Before you begin, check that you understand the meaning of the key words in the box. You will need to use these words to fill in the gaps in the reading text.  Read the text and look up any words that you do not understand. Wordreference.com Links to an external site. is a very good online dictionary that you may wish to use. This will give you the meaning of the word in your own language. Now that you understand the key words in the text, can you complete the missing blanks? When you have finished, listen to the audio and check your answers.

    • Page 21, Exercise 3 – Which of the four texts in Exercise 2 does this photo describe?
    • Page 21, Exercise 4 – Now let’s learn more vocabulary! Match the words and phrases from the text with their meanings. Remember to look up any words that are new to you and make a note of their meaning.
    • Page 21, Exercise 5 – If you have a friend or family member who can speak English, you could complete this exercise with them. If not, try to answer the questions yourself. You could also practise asking the questions. Listen to the model or example conversation to give you some ideas and help with pronunciation.

    • Page 21, Exercise 6 – When you are ready, try to write a paragraph about meeting and greeting in your culture. Use the words and expressions in Exercises 2 and 4 to help you, as well as the help box following Exercise 6.
