Module One
FUNCTIONS
Introduction
This Module should be read in conjunction with the Programme of Study (POS).
The POS lists the topics that are in the Module and gives you the relevant page references to your coursebook. The Module will give you more direction as you work through the various topics. It will highlight the most important items in each topic, as well as areas that require a little more attention. It will also point you towards the resources that you should be using, as well as listing the coursebook pages that you should read.
Remember to double-check with the Syllabus (the section numbers are listed on your POS) that you cover all of the items that you need to.
When studying this course, we recommend that you:
Explore the video tutorials, which provide very clear and useful demonstrations for most of the topics.
Get interactive practice using the additional links via MyMaths - another very useful resource. You can also complete the MyMaths online homework at the end of each lesson to gain immediate practice and feedback on your understanding.
Use your coursebook to consolidate your understanding, completing all of the exercises available and making notes for revision purposes.
This module contains a lot of material that, if you have successfully covered IGCSE Maths, or a similar curriculum, will be revision material for you. You will be able to spend less time working through this material. However, there may well be some topics (algebra, for example) in which you struggled a little in your previous Maths course. This course gives you the opportunity to strengthen your work in these areas, as you spend further time on them.
There will be a considerable amount of familiar material in this module (IGCSE Extended Mathematics Syllabus Download IGCSE Extended Mathematics Syllabus E1.7, E2.4, E1.18 Indices & Surds and E3.3 Functions). Nevertheless, you must not be complacent, as Functions in particular is a challenging topic. You need to focus carefully on it and ensure that you are confident with it - when sketching graphs, in particular.
Topics
There are two topics in module one as follows:
Topic One (1.1): Indices and Surds
