In this topic, you will practise the skills needed for a debate.
Session One (1.3.1): Structure of a Formal Debate
- Read and complete all of the activities on pages 24-25.

Session Two (1.3.2): Planning a Debate
- Read and complete all of the activities on pages 26-28 and Activity 6 on page 29.
- For further practice, complete the Eating Meat worksheet Download Eating Meat worksheet and check your answers.
Session Three (1.3.3): Comparing Texts
- Read and complete Activity 7 on page 29.
- Although you are not able to complete a classroom debate, prepare notes for both sides of the motion you select here. You could record yourself presenting both sides of the debate.
Extension Activity
If you are enjoying this topic, do join the Wolsey Hall Debate Club. The club meets once a month to debate different topics. The details are on the Community website, so you can prepare your thoughts before each meeting. This is a great way to practise your speaking skills.
