Topic One (1.1): News Stories
Objectives for the topic
- To explore how news stories are written and presented
- To identify how writers use fact and opinion to present the news.
Introduction
In this topic, you will read an article and analyse how it uses both facts and opinions.
Session One (1.1.1): Introduction to Truth and Reality
- Read the introduction to the topic and complete the activities on pages 8-9 in your Quest 3 coursebook.
Session Two (1.1.2): News Articles
- Read and complete all of the activities on pages 12-14. You can listen to the audio here:
- To complete Activity 2ci, you will need to check the context of the words. Read through the whole sentence in the text on page 13, as the words that come before or after the listed words will help to clarify the meaning. For example, the word ‘hidden’ can mean being out of sight or being unexplained.
Session Three (1.1.3): Facts and Opinions
- Read and complete all of the activities on pages 15-16.

Session Four (1.1.4): Analysing Facts and Opinions
- Read and complete all of the activities on page 17.
- Throughout this module, when you read through texts, try to consider whether they are objective (not influenced by personal feeling or opinion) or subjective (influenced by personal feeling or opinion). For example, do you think an influencer on YouTube or Instagram is likely to be objective or subjective?
Extension Task
Research a current topic of your choice and review its coverage from two different sources / contrasting newspapers. Many newspapers have online versions that you can look at. Make notes about whether you consider them to be objective or subjective and whether you think they are dependable sources.
Session Five (1.1.5): Grammar: Nouns
- Read and complete all of the activities on pages 4-5 (nouns) and pages 6-7 (noun phrases) in your Get It Right workbook.
