In this topic, you will read two articles about the same topic, but from two different time periods, to see how context can affect perspective. 


Session One (1.2.1): Context 

  • Consider the following question in the following scenario: What is ‘the truth’? Two friends arrange to meet at the cinema ‘after dinner’, but one friend thought this meant after midday and one after an evening meal. Can both things be ‘true’? 
  • Read and complete all of the activities on pages 18-20. You can listen to the audio of the texts here:

  • Text A was written in 1899, so it is important to consider the social and historical context. Society’s views on gender and gender stereotypes have changed a lot.

  • Read and complete all of the activities on pages 21-22. 
  • To help you complete Activity 4b, try to think of other words that begin with the prefixes ‘pre’ and ‘pro’. Use a dictionary if you need some examples for this. Always try to use your knowledge of root words and prefixes if you come across any words that you are not already familiar with.

  • Read and complete all of the activities on page 23. Use the worksheet ‘Linking Words’ Download ‘Linking Words’ to help you make comparisons between the two texts. Try to link ideas to the context as well to highlight why there are such differences between them.
