Topic Three (1.3): Persuasion
Objectives for the topic
- To explore how writers use language features to persuade.
Introduction
In this topic, you will read an article about persuasive texts and then write your own persuasive text.
Session One (1.3.1): Introduction to Persuasion
- Read and complete all of the activities on pages 24-26. You can listen to the extract here:
- For Activity 1, try to think of examples of texts you would encounter from the groups of people. For example, a political speech (politician), an Instagram post (social media influencer) or a letter home to parents (teachers). What type of devices would each group use?
Session Two (1.3.2): Rhetorical Devices
- Read and complete all of the activities on pages 27-28.
- It’s always important to plan your work, as this will help you to structure your ideas. Use the plan on page 28 as an example. You can refer to the various articles in the module (and your own notes) to help you gather information for your plan.
Session Three (1.3.3): Writing a Persuasive Article
- Read and complete Activity 6 on page 29.
- To help you structure your writing, remember to use connectives to link your ideas and paragraphs. Read through the Paragraph Cohesion and Connectives Word Mat Download Paragraph Cohesion and Connectives Word Mat, which contains many examples.
Session Four (1.3.4): Grammar: Prefixes
- Read and complete all of the activities on page 88 (prefixes) in your Get It Right workbook.
- If you need to revise this further, WATCH this video about prefixes and suffixes.
