Topic Ten (1.10): Leaf structure and photosynthesis
Objectives
By the end of this topic, you should be able to:
- explain how the structure of a leaf is adapted to its function.
Retrieval starter question
- Name two ways in which an alveolus is adapted for gas exchange.
Introduction
In this topic, you will learn about the adaptations of leaves. A plant needs to photosynthesise to make glucose. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen as a waste gas. A leaf has many different types of cells and many adaptations in order that gas exchange can occur.
Working through your course book
Reactivate activity - optional
Before applying your knowledge to new concepts in this topic, you can check your understanding of previous concepts. If you want to check your understanding and reactivate your knowledge, please complete this reactivate activity:
- Read page 39 of your Activate 3 coursebook and watch the Revision Monkey video below about photosynthesis:
- Answer the Reactivate your knowledge questions at the top of page 46.
- Read pages 42-43 of your Activate 3 coursebook.
Apply your knowledge
You are now ready to apply your knowledge. We are going to look at the inside of a leaf. Leaves are very thin, but there are many cell layers inside. Leaves are the main gas exchange surface of a plant. They have a large surface area to maximise light absorption. They are thin which allows for the diffusion of gases.
- Read pages 44-46 of your Activate 3 coursebook.
- Watch the two videos below about leaf structure:
