Topic Three (1.3): Solving word problems
Introduction
Now you are going to apply the strategies that you have learnt in the previous topics to real-life problems.
Warm Up
First complete the skill checker on page 88.
If you have forgotten how to subtract without using a calculator, please watch this video:
Working through the coursebook
- Start by watching this video, which gives examples of how we can solve real-life maths multiplication and division problems without using a calculator.
- Next watch this video on what to consider if there is a remainder (read the instructions below first):

Note. You click on the link above, then click on video help in the top right of the screen:
Then click on ‘Interpreting remainders in context’ and the video should pop up:
You can make it full screen by clicking on the double-headed diagonal arrow icon. You can also slow it down using the tortoise icon or speed it up using the hare icon:
- Read and make notes on pages 89-90, copying out the worked examples, if you think it will help you. Now see if you can answer the Band 2. questions 6-9 on page 91.
- If you would like more practice on word problems, then work through these lessons on the MyMaths website:

Plenary
You have a choice: you can end this lesson by playing a maths game, or watching a video (or even both, if you have time!)
Game-time!
We’ll end the lesson with another Times It Out challenge. This time, we’re practising multiplication skills to make numbers up to 144:

Video
You have seen today how numbers help us in everyday life. Can you imagine how we could work things out without using numbers? This video shows us an Aboriginal tribe which only has the word for “one” and does not use any other words for numbers! However, there was a study published in 2008 that showed that aboriginal children can count without words for numbers!
