STUDYING ART AND DESIGN

Studying art fosters creativity and innovation. By experimenting with various mediums, techniques and ideas, you will learn to think outside the box and develop your own unique solutions to the artistic challenges you will encounter on this course.

Art is a powerful way to express yourself and communicate with others. It helps you to convey emotions, ideas, and stories in novel and meaningful ways. Don’t forget that art also reflects the cultural, historical, and social contexts in which it is created. By studying art, you gain an insight into different cultures, traditions and perspectives and this will help you to appreciate the diversity of our world.

Studying art can open doors to a whole variety of career paths. Skills developed in this art course, such as creativity, communication and problem-solving, will be highly valued if you choose to become an artist, art critic or illustrator, and equally if you wish to pursue a career in design, advertising, animation or education.

In this course, you will be encouraged to actively engage in the creative process of art, craft and design. The course will enable you to acquire and develop technical skills whilst exploring a broad range of media, materials, techniques, processes, and technologies. This could involve drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, or other forms of visual expression allowing for experimentation and creativity. Through your studies you will become confident in taking risks and learn from experience as you develop and refine your own unique ideas and personal creative outcomes.

STUDYING WITH WOLSEY HALL

Course Structure

Our Wolsey Hall Art and Design course is written around a specialised scheme of work which has been designed by our tutor team to meet the criteria for the Pearson International GCSE Art and Design (Fine Art) syllabus.

There is no coursebook: instead, you will be learning through videos and your own investigations as you explore a range of materials techniques and processes. The focus will be on making and experiencing art and recording your creative journey as you develop ideas from a series of initial starting points.

You will be guided through the course by working through a series of online modules. These modules have been developed by subject specialists and include guidance linked to the course criteria. They include video tutorials and links to a range of resources and exempla artworks. You can work through these modules at your own pace and according to a timetable which is designed to suit you – for this reason, there are no live lessons on Wolsey Hall courses, but you will have the opportunity for calls with your tutor and Student Progress Manager (SPM) to check on your progress and to answer queries.

At the end of each module you will have the opportunity to reflect on your own ideas and practices as you present your artworks and ideas in the form of assignment tasks. The assignments are submitted online, marked by your course tutor and returned with a progress grade and detailed feedback.

The course resources are there to help you practise your skills and use art tools safely, so do spend time working through them. Please contact your tutor if you need any further help.

Course Support

When you enrol with Wolsey Hall you will be appointed a Student Progress Manager who is your key point of contact. They will support you throughout your course and help you keep to your assignment schedule.

You will begin your course with a welcome video call with your Course Tutor immediately after you have completed the introductory Module Zero. Here you will have an opportunity to discuss the course and ask any questions or raise any concerns. You will also have two additional calls (30 minutes) with your tutor during year one of the course, and a further three calls in year two. These calls are a vital part of the teaching support provided by the tutor as they give you the opportunity to examine your work together on camera and to ask questions or get clarification on an aspect of technique which you may not yet have mastered.

For International GCSE Art and Design, these video calls should take place after completing the assignments for Module Three and Module Six in year one and after Modules Eight, Nine and Eleven in year two.

At other times, if you require guidance, you will be able to contact your tutor via the Canvas messaging system.

We will support you at every stage in your studies. To help you get the most out of your course, we have produced a comprehensive Course Guide. We strongly encourage you to read through this Course Guide before you begin your studies.

Best Wishes

The Wolsey Hall Team
