MainActivity.png Main Activity

Discuss the basic parts of a plant: roots, stem, leaf, flower.

Use pictures or diagrams to help your student understand the different parts of a plant. Explain their functions in simple terms.

For roots, you can say: "Roots are like the plant's anchor. They help the plant stay in the ground and soak up water and food from the soil."

For stems: "Stems are like the plant's support beams. They help the plant stand tall and carry water and nutrients up to the leaves."

For leaves: "Leaves are like the plant's kitchen. They use sunlight to make food for the plant."

For flowers: "Flowers are like the plant's way of making new plant babies. They attract bees and butterflies to help with this."

For fruits: "Fruits are like the plant's way of protecting and carrying its seeds so they can grow into new plants."

Watch this video which explains these functions of a flowering plant.

Show your student some real plant specimens:

If you have access to small potted plants or can find examples in your outdoor space, show them to your student. Point out the roots, stems, leaves, and any flowers or fruits.

Encourage your student to explain what they've learned about the parts of a plant. Answer any questions they may have and provide additional examples if needed.

Ask your student to complete Parts of a flowering plant Download Parts of a flowering plant by cutting out the parts of the plant and sticking them to the sheet underneath. Ask them to label each part correctly, using what they have learnt from the lesson.

Ask your student to remember what each part of the plant does. Ask them to write a sentence for each of the parts that they have labelled. For example: The stem supports the plant and transports the water and the nutrients.
