Introduction

Investigations at home help you to apply your learning from the coursebook and videos and also provide memorable experiences that will help you to retain key information. However, they should be carried out in a safe and organised way. The golden rule is to read all of the instructions given in home investigation methods and only follow those instructions. DO NOT make up your own versions of the practical or be tempted to use incorrect quantities.

Home investigations should always start with seeking permission to carry out the investigation in the home. Next, you should read the downloaded investigation sheet carefully. This contains the instructions as to what should be done. This should be followed by an appraisal of any hazards and risks and a decision about what you need to do to keep yourself safe. As a bare minimum, you should always wear eye protection goggles when investigating. Next, find a safe and suitable place in which to work, then assemble all of the equipment and / or chemicals as advised in the instruction sheet. Then systematically work through each stage of the investigation.
