Module One

DEVELOPMENT – HOW DID YOU DEVELOP?

Introduction

Welcome to our Psychology course!

Module One begins by focusing on the topic of early brain development. Then you will learn about Jean Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development. Piaget’s stages of development have been influential particularly in the field of education.

The Module then goes on to consider other theories of development, in particular Dweck’s mindset theory and Willingham’s learning theory.

Regarding the two key studies (Piaget and Inhelder, 1956 and Gunderson, 2013) we have prepared a template for you to complete after reading the relevant pages in the textbook. It is crucial that you learn the main sections of these studies e.g. aims, procedure, results, conclusion and evaluation (strengths and weaknesses).

Another important part of this course involves the study of Issues and debates. In this first module you will learn about the development of morality. This module focuses specifically on Piaget’s 1932 theory of moral development and Kohlberg’s 1958 theory of moral development. Finally, William Damon’s 1999 theory considers how children develop their concept of their moral self.

Part of your studies will involve learning new terminology. To help you, we have created a definition template which already lists the key words used in each module. Please download and complete the Module One Definitions table as you work through the module.
