Begin today’s lesson by reviewing what you have covered in Lessons 1 and 2.

Next, tell your student that they are going to plan and write a recount. Ask your student to create a mind map with the word ‘recount’ in the middle. They should write anything they know about recounts. Ask them to think about language (formal, informal) verb tense, chronological vs non-chronological order, topics).

Once the mind map is complete, discuss it with your student.

Now tell your student what you did over the weekend. Think about the best way to start, how you should talk about what you did and how to finish. Ask your student to pay attention to the sequencing language you use (first, then, before, after). Have you used first person? (I, my) or third person? (Bill, he, she, they). Discuss.

Ask your student to do the same. Explain that these are recounts. Tell your student that every recount must include the following:

  • First person because it happened to you.
  • Use the past tense because it has already happened.
  • Recounts are written in the order in which they happened. This is called chronological order.
  • Use adverbs such as: firstly, next, then and finally.
  • Use descriptive words that will make it seem like your reader is there with you. Focus on the most exciting parts.
  • An introduction – tell us who, what, when, where and why
  • Body paragraphs – focusing on the details
  • Conclusion – how it ends.

Ask your student to add to their mind map.

Look at the Recount Samples resource and ask your student to identify which samples are recounts. They should be able to justify why they think it is one way or the other (using the criteria listed above).
