Introduction
Explain to your child that, over the next few writing sessions, they are going to write pages for a book called ‘All About Me’. It will be a book all about them and how they have grown up.
Explain that they will be the author of this book.
Author means that they will have written it themselves and their name can go on the front cover.
Also tell them that they will be the illustrator of the book.
Illustrator means that they will have drawn the pictures themselves. They will also be able to ask others to help if they need to.
Tell your child that they will start today by writing one of the first pages. Like all authors, they will also need to think of questions to ask people about how they have grown and will need to listen carefully to the answers.
Main Activity
Show your child Page 1 This Is Me Download Page 1 This Is Me. Look at each box and read the words together.
Ask:
- Do you think you can finish this page?
- Is there anything you need to ask someone to find out more?
- What do you want to find out? What sort of questions do you want to ask? (For example, ‘What is the colour of my eyes? What are some of my favourite things?’)
Together, talk about what needs to be written and drawn in each box.
You might want to let your child practise on a different piece of paper. Encourage them to speak their thoughts out loud so they can plan their writing by speaking it first.
Then allow some time for your child to write and draw on Page 1.
Also encourage them to colour in the words ‘This Is Me!’. Careful colouring in between lines helps with pencil control and leads to better handwriting.
Extra Challenge
Outside the lesson, your child may wish to make a similar book about someone else (for example, a sibling, friend or relative). They could do this on plain paper but following the ideas on the template for this lesson.
What to Notice
While they are doing this activity, remember to praise your child for the skills they are using.
For example:
‘You are thinking about what you want to know and asking good questions.’
‘Your writing and colouring are very neat and clear.’
Handwriting and Spelling
Turn to page 4 of the Collins Handwriting Book and ask your child to complete the page.
Spellings for this week are focused on the sounds /n/ spelt ‘kn’ and less often ‘gn’ at the
beginning of words.
Please practise these words with your child using the Weekly Spelling Activities: Download Weekly Spelling Activities:

- know
