If you are new to Wolsey Hall, it will be beneficial for you to watch some of the videos from the Year One course in order to prepare you for teaching the phonics element of the reading lessons.

Today, you will be playing some basic phonics games that are demonstrated in Video 2 – Phonics Games.

If you have limited experience of phonics and are unsure of the sounds that some letters and groups of letters make, it would also be helpful for you to watch the Sound Flashcard videos.

Have the YouTube video of story There’s a Tiger in the Garden ready to watch again in case your child needs to be reminded of the story. Have your child’s Book Review, started in the last lesson, ready for them to complete today.

Explain to your child that two of their weekly reading lessons will have a phonics focus. This means that they will be improving their reading skills by thinking about the sounds made by letters and groups of letters. In today’s lesson, they will play a few short games to help them to practise some of the sounds.

First, go through each of the flashcards one by one and ask your child to say the sound/s that they know for each letter. Make a note of any they are not sure of. These will be flashcards that you can focus on in future lessons.

Set your child a challenge, for example, how many flashcards can they name in 30 seconds? Or one minute? Or, how quickly can they name all the flashcards? You can record their score and times and set them the task of trying to improve in future lessons.

Play a few rounds of ‘Flip Over’ and ‘Slow Reveal’ (as shown in Video 2 – Phonics Games) with flashcards that your child is confident with. This will get them used to the games.

Ask your child if there are any sounds or flashcards that they find hard to remember. Note these down as well. You will refer to these notes when deciding which flashcards to focus on in next week’s lessons.

Does your child know at least one sound for most of the flashcards? If not, it may be worth refreshing your memory of the sounds by watching the Sound Flashcard videos and spending 5-10 minutes per day outside of reading lessons practising these together.

UNDERSTANDING

 Understanding the Text

Using Heidi’s Book Review for reference, ask your child to tell you what they want to write in each of the boxes to complete their review of There’s a Tiger in the Garden. Remind them that they need to think critically, giving reasons for their thoughts about the story.

Support your child as they complete their book review.

If your child has difficulty choosing which aspects of the story to focus on, you can make suggestions.

For example, say, ‘You could write about the fishing polar bear or the mermaid in the bath. Which of those bits did you like the best?’

Stretch Icon.png Extra Challenge

Ask your child to compare There’s a Tiger in the Garden to the other stories they have heard, Lost and Found and Max the Brave. Which do they like most? Can they give reasons for their choice?

At the end of the lesson, ask your child to add today’s book to their Reading Journal.
